🧠 The core of Byron Katie’s ā€˜The Work’: Four questions that free your mind

Byron Katie’s method is surprisingly simple, yet incredibly powerful. Whenever you have a stressful thought, ask yourself these four questions:

1ļøāƒ£ Is it true?

Your mind immediately screams ā€œYES!ā€ – but hold on. Can you be absolutely sure it’s true? Often, we base our thoughts on assumptions, not facts.

2ļøāƒ£ Can you absolutely know that it’s true?

Here’s where the magic happens. Can you say with 100% certainty that your thought is a universal truth? Most of the time, we realize we’re seeing through a limited lens.

3ļøāƒ£ How do you react – what happens – when you believe that thought?

Think about how you feel when you hold on to that thought. What does it do to your body? How do you treat others? This is the moment when you see how destructive some thoughts can be.

4ļøāƒ£ Who would you be without that thought?

What if you let go of the thought? Do you feel lighter? Freer? Often, we realize the thought doesn’t serve us – it only causes pain.

šŸ“Œ Exercise:Ā Write down a stressful thought and go through the four questions. What do you discover? āœļø

šŸ”„ The Turnaround: Living from a New Perspective

After going through the four questions comes the most powerful step: the turnaround. This means you reverse the original thought and explore whether the opposite could also be true.

šŸ”¹ Example:

āŒ "My colleague doesn’t appreciate me." āž”ļø "I don’t appreciate my colleague."

āŒ "My partner should make me happier." āž”ļø "I should make myself happier."

āŒ "My past should have been different." āž”ļø "My past is exactly as it should have been."

šŸ’” Why does this work?Ā Because we often place responsibility outside ourselves, while we have more control than we think.

šŸ“Œ Challenge:Ā Write down a negative thought and turn it around. Can you see that the turnaround might also (or even more) be true?

šŸ’„ Why We Suffer: The Fight Against Reality

According to Byron Katie, stress has one cause: resisting what is.

šŸ”¹ Three kinds of business in life:

1ļøāƒ£ Your business – What you can control (your thoughts, actions, choices).

2ļøāƒ£ Other people’s business – What others think, do, and say (beyond your control). 🚷

3ļøāƒ£ God’s business – Nature, the universe, fate (completely out of your hands). šŸŒ

If you feel bad, ask yourself: "Am I involved in something I can’t control?"

šŸ“Œ Challenge:Ā Next time you feel annoyed, ask: "Whose business am I in?" Stay with yourself. šŸ™Œ

ā¤ļø Acceptance Does Not Mean Giving Up

Many people think Loving What IsĀ means just giving in. But acceptance doesn’t mean becoming passive – it means you stop fighting reality and start making conscious choices from there.

šŸ”¹ What acceptance IS:

āœ”ļø Facing the truth and letting go of what you can’t change.

āœ”ļø Taking action from a place of calm.

āœ”ļø Developing self-acceptance instead of self-criticism.

šŸ”¹ What acceptance is NOT:

āŒ Letting everything happen without boundaries.

āŒ Giving up on improving yourself.

āŒ Suppressing emotions and pretending to be ā€˜okay.’

šŸ“Œ Exercise:Ā Where in your life are you fighting something that’s already happened? What if you just let it be? ✨

šŸ›  Practical Applications of The Work

Want to apply The WorkĀ right away? Here are some ways to integrate it into your life:

šŸ”¹ 1ļøāƒ£ Daily reflection:Ā Write down stressful thoughts and work through the four questions.

šŸ”¹ 2ļøāƒ£ In conflicts:Ā Use the turnaround to see a situation from a new angle.

šŸ”¹ 3ļøāƒ£ In stressful moments:Ā Ask yourself, "Whose business am I in?" and return to your own.

šŸ“Œ Challenge:Ā Write down one stressful thought each day and work through it. What changes?

🌟 Freedom Lies in Your Thinking

Loving What IsĀ teaches you that pain doesn’t come from the world around you, but from the thoughts you have about it. And the good news? You can change your thoughts.

šŸ”¹ Summary:

āœ… You don’t suffer from what happens, but from your thoughts about it.

āœ… The WorkĀ helps break through limiting beliefs.

āœ… The turnaround offers a new perspective.

āœ… Acceptance isn’t giving up – it’s choosing consciously.

āœ… Freedom comes from within – you have the power to create it.

šŸ“Œ Final challenge:Ā What’s a thought that’s holding you back? Go through the four questions and see how you can set yourself free!
